| Triage | Organized system for sorting or classifying patients into priority levels, depending on illness or injury severity |
| Emergent triage | Implies that a condition exists that poses an immediate threat to life or limb (Ex: chest pain with diaphoresis, hemorrhage, respiratory distress, stroke, vital sign instability) |
| Urgent triage | Indicates that the patient should be treated quickly but that an immediate threat to life does not exist at the moment (Ex: severe abdominal pain, fractures, renal colic, respiratory infections, & soft-tissue injuries) |
| Nonurgent triage | Can generally tolerate waiting several hours for health care services without a significant risk for clinical deterioration (Ex: simple fractures, rashes, sprains & strains, & UTI) |
| Level I trauma center | Regional resource facility that is capable of providing leadership & total collaborative care for every aspect of injury, from prevention through rehabilitation (Ex: UF Gainesville) |
| Level II trauma centers | Usually located in community hospitals & are capable of providing care to the vast majority of injured patients; transfers patient if needs exceed resource capabilities (Baptist, OPMC, Memorial) |
| Level III trauma centers | Critical link to higher-capability trauma centers in communities that do not have ready access to level I or II centers (Putnam) |
| Level IV trauma center | Offer advanced life support care in rural or remote settings that do not have ready access to a higher-level trauma center such as a ski |
| Primary survey | The initial assessment of the trauma patient; Airway Breathing Circulation Disability (neuro status) Exposure (ABCs); *exception: stop bleeding first* |
