Weather, Climate, and Water Cycling

TermDefinition
precipitation rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground
drought a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water
humidity the state of having relatively high level of water vapor in the atmosphere
atmospheric pressure the pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere
latitude the distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
adhesion the sticking together of particles of different substances
longitude the distance of a place east or west of the prime meridian, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
severe weather the dangerous effects created by these changes in the atmosphere that result in tornadoes, extreme thunderstorms or blizzards
transpiration the process in which plants release the water inside it in the form of moisture or water vapor
cohesion the intermolecular attraction by which the elements of a body are held together
convection the process of heat transfer by the actual motion of matter
downdraft a downward current of air
tornado a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system
updraft an upward current of air
weather front a boundary between two different air masses, a warm air mass and a cold air mass usually causing stormy weather
barometer an instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude
cyclone a system of winds rotating inward to an area of low atmospheric pressure with a circulation
climate the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period
hygrometer an instrument for measuring the humidity of the air or a gas
water cycle the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration
surface tension the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid
