Protists

TermDefinition
protist a eukaryote that cannot be classified as a plant, animal or fungus
protozoan animal-like protist
pseudopod "false foot"; a temporary extension of cytoplasm
contractile vacuole an organelle that collects and expels excess water; helps maintain the organism's osmotic balance
algae plant-like protists; have no true roots, stems or leaves
spore in protists, a reproductive unit that can form a new individual; may be motile
dinoflagellate plant-like protist that moves with flagellum; some are bioluminescent; causes red tide poisoning
diatom unicellular plant-like protists with shells made of silica
brown algae - marine protist with special bladders to float to the surface and move around; includes kelp (large seaweed)
fungus-like protists protists that share characteristics of fungi and live in moist, shady places
plasmodial slime molds saprophytic fungus-like protists that live as a large mass of cytoplasm with many nuclei
water molds filamentous fungus-like protists; may be parasites; attack some food crops
colonial unicellular organisms that live and work together, e.g. Volvox
endosymbiosis a theory explaining the evolution of mitochondria and chloroplasts, beginning with one organism living inside another organism
saprobe/saprophyte secretes digestive enzymes into dead or decaying matter, then absorbs nutrients
parasite an organism that lives in or on a host
motile being able to move
pathogen a virus or microbe (bacteria, fungi or protist) that causes disease
conjugation exchange of genetic material (in a second nucleus) between two protists; a type of sexual reproduction
gametic reproduction joining of two gametes (sex cells) from two protists to form a fertilized
phytoplankton free-living aquatic organisms that form the base of marine and freshwater food webs
filamentous a plant-like protist body plan in which cells are joined end to end
fruiting body a fungus-like reproductive structure in some fungus-like protists
radiolarian a protozoan with a shell, often made of silica
zooflagellate a protozoan with flagella
pellicle a thin, flexible layer of protein protecting the cell membrane
sporozoan a protozoan that cannot move
cellular slime molds saprophytic fungus-like protists that live individually; in unfavorable conditions they live as a group
eyespot light-sensitive organelle in some protists
