Plant Functions/Def

TermDefinition
Lower epidermis epidermal cells on the lower leaf and contains most of the stomata
Upper epidermis epidermal cells on the upper leaf and contains less of the stomata
Epidermis Herbacious outermost cells that help create a boundary and barrier to prevent water loss and disease/pests
Palisade Mesophyll Has chloroplasts for photosythesis and is transpartent to allow light to penetrate
Cuticle Waxy coating on leaf surface, prevents water loss and creates physical barrier to protect the leaf
Stoma Opening (pore) in leaves through with gases pass in and out of the leaf
Guard Cells control the opening and closing of stomata
Vein (Vascular Bundle) Contain vascular tissues (xylem and phloem) to transport water, minerals and sugars
Spongy Mesophyll layer of loosely packed photosynthetic cells with large air pockets between them under lower surface of a leaf on a terrestrial plant.
Air Space Hollow space between spongy mesophyll cells which increase surface area for gas exchange
Xylem Vascular tissue with thick-walled cells that are dead at maturity and transport water and minerals to the leaves
Phloem Vascular tissue that have thin-walled cells, and are living at maturity. Transport sugars produced by photosynthesis in the leaves to other parts of the plant
Chloroplasts Plant cell organelle that contains chlorophyll pigments which captures solar energy to complete photosynthesis.
Mesophyll Layer Photosynthetic middle layer of cells in the leaf of a terrestrial plant.
Vascular Cambium Meristematic cell layer (like stem cells) in the vascular tissue that divide and form new xylem and phloem tissue
Pith Ground tissue in inner regions of the stem and can store starches
Cork Tough, outer layer of the tree that prevents water loss from the stem that cracks
Sapwood younger xylem, conducts the water and minerals.
Heartwood older xylem fills with resins, oils and other chemicals
Cortex Outer layer of a stem or root below epidermis and can store carbs
Root Cap Protect the root meristem
Root Hairs Microscopic extension of the epidermal cells of the root and absorbs water and mineral ions
Endodermis Innermost layer of cells in the cortex of the root and help make sure absorbed water and minerals do not flow back to cortex.
Sepal Protects maturing bud
Pedicel Stalk that supports a single flower
Receptacle Holds the flower
Stamen Male part of a flower
Filament Apart of the stamen and are long and thin stems
Anther Apart of the stamen and is on top of the filament
Pistil Female part of a flower
Stigma Sticky top surface of pistil
Style A shaft found on the pistil
Ovary Holds the ovules
Ovules contains female gamates (egg cells)
Pollen Grain contains male gametes (sperm cells)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
