Elements of Poetry
| Term | Definition |

| alliteration | the repetition of the same Beginning sound, usually a consonant, in a phrase or line of poetry. ex My mom must make muffins. |
| stanza | a group of related lines in a poem |
| poetry | an expression of ideas or feeling in words, usually having form, rhythm, rhyme. |
| simile | the comparison of two things that are not really alike by using the words like or as. Ex. She swims like a fish. |
| rhyme | two or more lines that end with rhyming words. |
| imagery | the author's use of description and words to create pictures in the reader's mind |
| onomatopoeia | a sound device in which a word makes the sound. Ex. BOOM! Zoom! |
| metaphor | the comparison of two things in which one is said to be another. Ex. She is a fish in the water. |
| repetition | a sound device in which sounds, words, or phrases are repeated to emphasize a point |
| personification | when human qualities and ideas are given to things Ex. The trees waved at us. |
| rhyming words | words that end in the same sounds Ex. cat mat hat |
| line break | space between lines |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhymes within the poem |
