| extrusive igneous rock | forms when lava cools on Earth’s surface, usually with smaller crystals because of quicker cooling |
| the rock cycle | set of natural processes that form, change, break down, and re-form rocks |
| metamorphic rock | forms when heat or pressure causes older rocks to change into new types of rocks |
| igneous rock | forms when molten rock cools and becomes solid |
| sedimentary rock | forms when pieces of older rocks, plants, and other loose material get pressed or cemented together |
| metamorphism | process in which an existing rock is changed by heat or pressure - or both |
| intrusive igneous rock | forms when magma cools within Earth, usually with larger crystals because of a longer cooling time |
| recrystallization | process where heat and pressure break the bonds that join atoms in minerals, then the atoms join together to form new bonds |
| sediment | materials that settle out of water or air |
| foliation | an arrangement of minerals in flat or wavy parallel bands |
| rock | a naturally formed solid that is usually made up of one or more types of minerals |
