extrusive igneous rock forms when lava cools on Earth’s surface, usually with smaller crystals because of quicker cooling
the rock cycle set of natural processes that form, change, break down, and re-form rocks
metamorphic rock forms when heat or pressure causes older rocks to change into new types of rocks
igneous rock forms when molten rock cools and becomes solid
sedimentary rock forms when pieces of older rocks, plants, and other loose material get pressed or cemented together
metamorphism process in which an existing rock is changed by heat or pressure - or both
intrusive igneous rock forms when magma cools within Earth, usually with larger crystals because of a longer cooling time
recrystallization process where heat and pressure break the bonds that join atoms in minerals, then the atoms join together to form new bonds

foliation an arrangement of minerals in flat or wavy parallel bands
rock a naturally formed solid that is usually made up of one or more types of minerals
