scientific method
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| scientific experiment | PROCEDURE that TESTS a HYPOTHESIS by collecting information under controlled conditions/ tests one one variable |
| Problem | always in form of a question; the question we are trying to answer by doing the experiment |
| Hypothesis | A testable prediction |
| Variable | anything that could change in an experiment and affect the results/outcome of the investigation |
| independent variable | the experimental factor that is manipulated |
| dependent variable | The factor being measured; result or data |
| experimental group | A group within an experiment that is exposed to the independent variable. |
| Constant factors | These are factors that are held constant throughout the experiment. these include all factors except the experimental variable. |
| control group | the group that does not receive the experimental treatment, used for comparison |
| procedure | a set sequence of steps to complete an experiment |
| Trials | replicate groups that are exposed to the same conditions in an experiment |
| Data Table | organizes data into rows and columns |
| Observation | Use of one or more of the senses-sight, hearing, touch, smell, and sometimes taste- to gather information |
| Experiment | An investigation done in order to make a discovery or test a hypothesis |
| Evaluate | Estimate the nature, quality, ability of significance of your experiment |
| Theory | A set of assumptions, propositions, or accepted facts that attempt to provide a plausible or rational explanation of cause and effect relationship among a group of observed phenomenon. |
| Graphs | visual representation of the relationship between two different variables ex: bar graph, line graph |
| Data Analysis | making sense of observations and data collected during an experiment and looking at patterns and relationships between the independent variable and the dependent variable |
| inference | a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning |
| drawing conclusion | combining several pieces of information to make an inference |
| Bar Graph | a type of graph used to categorize data |
| line graph | A graph that compares two variables (independent vs. dependent) |
| Pie graph/chart | used to show parts of a whole (percentages) or categories of data |
| What are 3 ways to increase validity | 1) increase sample size 2) increase trials (test again) 3) peer review |
| Valid | Having a sound basis in logic or fact that is reasonable. |
| Scientific Method | The scientific method is a specific method by which scientists gain knowledge about the world. |
