Properties of Water

Bio Properties of Water

QuestionAnswer
Adhesion Water molecules "stick" to other surfaces
Cohesion Water molecules bond together with hydrogen bonds; dome of water on a penny
Surface Tension The surface of water resists an external force, due to cohesion; floating a paperclip
Capillary Action Water molecules move upward against gravity. this is how they move upward through a plant through the xylem and it is the result of cohesion and adhesion
High Specific Heat Water is able to absorb a large amount of energy before changing temperature by one degree celsius. Resistance to sudden temp changes makes water an excellent habitat.
High Heat of Vaporization Water in its liquid form has an unusually high boiling point temperature, a value close to 100°C. As water evaporates, energy is taken up by the process, cooling the environment where the evaporation is taking place.
Water is the universal solvent Water dissolves anything that is polar. Ex: Water dissolves salt in our blood, providing sodium and chlorine
What does the evaporation of sweat do Allows the organism to cool so that homeostasis of body temp can be maintained
Hydrophilic Water "loving"
Hydrophobic Water "hating"
Covalent Bond Electrons are shared between atoms
What does it mean that water is a polar molecule? There's an unequal sharing of electrons, this is bc there are more protons in the nucleus of oxygen compared to hydrogen. This stronger positive charge attracts electrons closer to the nucleus giving that portion of the molecule a slight negative charge.
What are hydrogens bonded to with covalent bonds? Oxygen
What gives water the properties that keeps us alive? The polarity of the water molecule is what allows it to bond to other water molecules (hydrogen bonds)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
