What has happened to ocean pH levels as sea levels rise? pH drops
What is the cause of the coral reefs dying? Too much CO2 dissolved in the oceans
What are two effects of desertification? Less farmable land, less fresh water.
What is the cause of more intense tropical storms & hurricanes? Warmer waters
How does deforestation change the CO2 concentration in the air? More CO2 in the air as less photosynthesis occurs.
Name 3 factors that cause deforestation? Insects infestations, man clear cutting, hot dry summers causing forest fires
What is the role of wetlands in an ecosystem? Stores, filters water, habitat for plants & animals.
How do fossils provide information about their environment? Animals & plant are uniquely adapted to their environment.
What type of satellite orbits the poles? polar orbiting satellites
What type of satellite stays in the same position above the Earth? Geostationary satellites
What unit is used to measure someone's carbon footprint? tonne of CO2
What is the purpose of the IPCC? Environmental, social, economics effects of climate change and to come up with effective solutions
What is the Kyoto Protocol? A binding agreement between countries to lower greenhouse gas emissions
What does the Energy Star symbol represent? The appliance has met lower energy specifications which reduces greenhouse gases
What is a cap & trade system? A maximum ceiling on carbon dioxide is placed on a company. A company can trade for carbon offsets with other companies that are under the ceiling.
What is a carbon tax? A tax on products that cause greenhouse gas emissions
