Earth Interior Vocab

TermDefinition
Crust the outermost solid shell of a rocky planet, dwarf planet or natural satellite
Density mass per unit volume
Displacement the occupation by a submerged body or part of a body of a volume that would otherwise be occupied by a fluid
Float rest or move on or near the surface of a liquid without sinking
Inner Core the Earth's innermost part. It is primarily a solid ball with a radius of about 1,220 kilometres (760 miles), which is about 70% of the Moon's radius. It is composed of an iron–nickel alloy and some light elements.
Lithosphere the rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.
Mantle the mostly-solid bulk of Earth's interior. It lies between Earth's dense, super-heated core and its thin outer layer, the crust. It is about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) thick, and makes up a whopping 84% of Earth's total volume.
Mass how much matter there is in something.
Outer Core a fluid layer about 2,300 km (1,400 mi) thick and composed of mostly iron and nickel that lies above Earth's solid inner core and below its mantle. Its outer boundary lies 2,890 km (1,800 mi) beneath Earth's surface.
Planetary Differentiation the process of separating out different constituents of a planetary body as a consequence of their physical or chemical behavior's, where the body develops into compositionally distinct layers;
Sink to go to the bottom
Volume the amount of space that a substance or object occupies
Tectonic Plates gigantic pieces of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle.
Mesosphere lies between the thermosphere and the stratosphere. This is the highest layer of the atmosphere in which the gases are all mixed up rather than being layered by their mas
Seismic Wave a mechanical wave of acoustic energy that travels through the Earth or another planetary body.
