Unit 3: Interactions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| food web | A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains |
| food chain | A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten |
| interaction | the effect of one factor (such as environment) depends on another factor (such as heredity) |
| Niche | An organism's particular role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living. |
| Producer | An organism that can make its own food. |
| Consumer | An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Decomposer | An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms |
| tertiary consumer | a carnivore at the topmost level in a food chain that feeds on other carnivores; an animal that feeds only on secondary consumers. |
| Herbivore | A consumer that eats only plants. |
| Carnivore | A consumer that eats only animals. |
| Biome | A group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms |
| Omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals |
| abiotic factors | Nonliving components of environment. |
| habitat | Place where an organism lives |
| Symbiosis | A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species. |
| Mutualism | A relationship between two species in which both species benefit |
| Commensalism | A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected |
| Parasitism | A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed |
| desert | An extremely dry area with little water and few plants |
| rainforest biome | a dense evergreen forest found in tropical areas of heavy rainfall; has the most biodiversity due to ample resources |
| Grasslands/Prairies | Areas of moderate temperatures and seasonal drought. Relatively flat areas usually in the interior of continents. |
| Taiga | Dense forest of evergreens located in the upper regions of the Northern Hemisphere. |
| temperate forest | forest in a temperate region, characterized by trees that drop their leaves annually |
| Tundra | An extremely cold, dry biome. |
| Predation | An interaction in which one organism kills another for food. |
| prey | An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism |
| primary consumer | consumer that feeds directly on producers (herbivore) |
| secondary consumer | Organism that eats herbivores. |
| apex predator | the top predator in an ecosystem |
| tertiary consumer | The 4th level in a food chain after producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer |
| Trophic levels | The different levels into which energy flows in an ecosystem. Example: Grass is the first trophic level in a grassland ecosystem where buffalo are primary consumers. |
