| population | all the members of one species that live within an area of an ecosystem |
| producers | plants that make or produce their own food |
| consumers | living things that eat other living things |
| herbivores | animals that eat plants |
| carnivores | animals that get food by eating other animals |
| omnivores | animals that eat plants and other animals |
| decomposers | organisms that break down plant and animal waste and remains |
| food chain | the transfer of energy from one organism to another by eating and being eaten |
| food web | a system of overlapping food chains in which the flow of energy branches out in many directions |
| competition | when two or more living things need the same resources in order to survive |
