Global Warming cycle

Gr.10 Biogeochemical Cycles & Global Warming

QuestionAnswer
What is an albedo? the percentage of light that gets reflected back by a certain material
What type of gas decomposes the ozone layer? CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons)
What does the ozone layer protect us from? Harmful UV rays that come from the Sun
What type of greenhouse gas comes from bacteria breaking down waste? Methane
What type of greenhouse gas accounts for most of the greenhouse effect? water vapour
What type of greenhouse gas mainly comes from combustion of fuels? carbon dioxide
What is the anthropogenic greenhouse effect? the increased ability for the atmosphere to absorb more infrared heat due to man made activities
What percentage of UV rays does the ozone layer reflect back into space? 30%
What type of radiation is emitted by the ground and absorbed by the greenhouse gas layer? Infrared
What is conduction? the transfer of heat between solid atoms
What is convection/advection? the transfer of heat between liquid or gas atoms
What is the Great Conveyor Belt? The rising of water near the equator and the sinking of water near the poles that causes ocean convection currents.
What two factors causes ocean water to be more dense? colder and higher salinity
What is the term that describes the recycling of matter in the environment? Biogeochemical
What is respiration? Consumers breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide
What term is used to describe plants making sugar and oxygen by using sunlight, CO2 & H2O? Photosynthesis
What is produced when CO2 is recycled by dissolving in the oceans? Limestone
What is nitrogen fixation? Converting N2 gas into nitrates (NO3-)
What type of organism converts dead organisms into sediment? Decomposers
What factors would cause dead organisms to convert into fossil fuels? low oxygen environments, high pressure, high temperature, millions of years
What in the environment causes N2 to react with oxygen to form nitrates? Lightening
What can be found in the roots of plants that converts N2 in the soil to nitrates (NO3-)? Nitrogen fixing bacteria
What industrial process makes NH3 from N2 and H2? The Haber Process
What is the main source of smog (NO2, NO)? Automobile exhaust
What is the main issue of using fertilizer in crops? Excess fertilizer spills into lakes by run off causing more algae to grow which uses up oxygen in the lake

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
