Volcanoes 6th

Volcanoes vocabulary flashcards

TermDefinition
Volcanoes Openings in the ground that release energy from deep within the Earth.
Core This is the center of the Earth and is as hot as the surface of the sun!
Crust This is the planet's rocky outer layer. It is relatively thin, and keeps the mantle material trapped below.
Mantle This is the layer between the crust and the core.
Magma Molten rock mixed with hot gasses, the bubbles rise.
Lava This is what magma is called when it reaches the surface.
Shield Volcano Thin streams of lava form flat mountains with broad slopes.
Shield Volcano Example Kilauea
Pyroclastic Flows Explosions of hot gasses and rocks, fast avalanches, thick lava and poisonous gas.
Stratovolcano Lava doesn't flow far, piling up in steep slopes.
Stratovolcano Examples Mount St. Helens, Pinatubo
Tectonic Plates Magma often forms near margins of these massive structures of Earth's crust and upper mantle.
Mid-Ocean Ridges This is where plates pull apart, these are the most volcanically active parts of Earth's crust.
Pacific Ring of Fire This huge volcanic area is fueled by collisions between denser oceanic and less dense continental plates.
Subducted This is when oceanic plates go under continental (land) plates.
Hotspot These happen far away from plate boundaries. They are either hot regions of mantle or weaker regions of crust.
Dormant A volcano that hasn't erupted in a long time.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
