| Participle | A verb form acting as an Adjective |
| Ending | Most end in -ing or -ed; but may have other endings |
| Where in the sentence? | Acting as an adjective, you will find participles before nouns. They also come in phrases which will describe a noun; most often the subject. |
| How many words? | Maybe one or an entire phrase. |
| Example sentence: The running water is crystal clear. | Running is the present participle, describing the subject water. |
| As a verbal, a participle can... | take on the power of a verb and have other parts of speech attached such as a direct object, adverb, or even a prepositional phrase. |
