LAB 9 TERMS

TermDefinition
CNS Parts Brain and spinal cord
Tracts bundle of neurons in the CNS
Phylum Chordata characteristics 1. dorsal hollow nerve tube 2. post-anal tail 3. post-pharyngeal gill slits 4. a notochord
What class are humans Class Mammalia
Doral hollow nerve tube in humans our spinal cords
Post-Pharyngeal gill slits in humans early in development, as we grow they disapear
Post-Anal Tail coccyx
Notochord rigid cartilaginous rod that runs along the brain and spinal cord
PNS Parts sensory receptors and nerves that carry the nerve impulse to and from the CNS
PNS Function sensing stimuli and carrying the response to effector organs
CNS Function determines a response(integration) and relays it via the PNS to muscle or glands
White matter comprised mainly of myelinated axons and dendrites
Gray matter mainly unmyelinated neuron cell bodies
Swelling ganglion, ganglia containing the cell bodies of neurons
Ventral Root(spinal cord model) contains all motors neurons
Cervical neck region, 7 vertebrae
Thoracic chest region, 12 vertebrae
Lumbar lower back, 5 vertebrae
Coccyx very end of the spine, consisting of 2-4 tiny individual or fused vertrbrae
Intervertebral Dics serve as cushions between the bodies of the vertebrae
Medullated Nerve Fibers gaps in myelin are nodes of ranvier
Node of Ranvier important in increasing the speed of vertebrate nerve impulse propagation by allowing for the phenomenon of saltatory propagation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
