Cellular Respiration

Dual Credit Biology - Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesiis

QuestionAnswer
What is substrate level phosphorylation? ADP -> ATP by adding a phosphate from an attached organic molecule.
Where does substrate level phosphorylation occur? Glycolysis and Krebs. Cytoplasm and Mitochondrial matrix
What is oxidative phosphorylation? ADP -> ATP by adding an inorganic phosphate.
Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur? ETC and Chemiosmosis. Mitochondria.
Why is energy not stored at ATP. The phosphates in ATP are all negative charges meaning they don't like each other and are easily split which is not good for storage.
How is energy captured during catabolism (break down) of glucose during Glycolysis and Kreb's Cycle? ATP, NADH, FADH
How does phosphofructokinase regulate the rate of Glycolysis? When does this happen? When lots of ATP is present the active site changes shape so that nothing can bind with it.
Why is fermentation important to cells? They allow cells to continue making ATP when there isn't a sufficient amount of oxygen present.
What is the chemiosmotic hypothesis? A proton-motive force was responsible for driving the synthesis of ATP. Protons would be pumped across the inner mitochondrial membrane as electrons went through the electron transfer chain.
What happens to the rate of the phases of cellular respiration if you increase any of the intermediates through the pathways? If one pathway is faster than the others that would cause an imbalance. If one speeds up they should all speed up so there is no abundance of one certain thing.
What is the function of a pigment? Pigments absorb light.
What is the primary pigment in green plants? Chlorophyll.
Why are there several different pigments in plants? So that the plant can get all of the wavelengths of light. Different color = different wavelength
Why are carotenoids and flavonoids important to plant cells? Carotenoids absorb colors that chlorophyll can't absorb. Flavonoids protect the plant by absorbing UV light (sunscreen)
What happens when energy is absorbed by pigments? The electrons within the cells that absorb the pigment become energized.
Why do leaves change color in the fall? Chlorophyll production slows down as the tree goes dormant and no longer needs

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
