Weather Guide

A stack of weather definitions and terms

TermDefinition
Warm front A front that brings cloudy skies, steady rain for a long time, and increased temperatures.
Cold front A front that brings cloudy skies, heavy precipitation for a short amount of time, and decreased temperatures.
Cirrus clouds Clouds that are thin, wispy, and are made of ice crystals. Clouds that bring clear skies.
Cumulus clouds Clouds that are white and puffy. Clouds that bring fair weather.
Stratus clouds Clouds that are low, and cover skies like blankets. Clouds that bring overcast weather, and little sun.
Cumulonimbus clouds Clouds that are tall, large, and dark. Clouds that bring thunderstorms.
Nimbostratus clouds Clouds that cover skies in thin layers. Clouds that bring light rain or snow.
High pressure system A pressure system that brings clear skies, sunny and fair weather, dry conditions, and cumulus clouds
Low pressure system A pressure system that brings cloudy skies, rainy weather, and stratus clouds.
Jet stream A fast flowing air current responsible for the movement of air masses across the United States from west to east. A current that forms a boundary between a cold air mass and a warm air mass. Winds that blow from a boundary of cold air to a boundary of warm air
Gulf stream A strong ocean current that begins in the Gulf of Mexico and causes warm water to travel up the east coast of the United States. A current that keeps temperatures in North Carolina moderate all year A current that is warmer during the winter and cooler during the summer
Prevailing westerlies Global winds that move air masses from west to east across the United States. A weather pattern responsible for influencing weather in North Carolina
Sea breeze A breeze that happens during the day. A cold breeze from the sea that blows to the land
Land breeze A breeze that happens during the night. A cold breeze from the land that blows to the sea.
Weather The day to day weather conditions of a particular place at a particular time that moves west to east.
Climate The average weather condition in an area over a long period of time.
