Cells/Homeostasis

Pre-AP Biology

TermDefinition
Positive feedback loop Causes a system to change further in the same direction; increases the response to an imbalance; contractions during birth
Mitosis Cell division in which the nucleus divides into nuclei containing the same number of chromosomes; creates two identical cells
Prophase First and longest phase of mitosis, during which the chromosomes become visible and the centrioles separate and take up positions on the opposite sides of the nucleus
Metaphase Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
Telephase Phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
Cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells
Gene expression determines what a cell will become; a specific gene is turned on...
Specialized cells cells uniquely suited to perform a particular function
Cell cycle series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide
Homeostasis A tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state; the "normal" state of an organism.
Receptor "notices a problem"; detects environmental stimulus such as overheating and sends messages to your brain to fix this problem.
Control system "analyzes the problem"; receives signals from receptors and figures out how to bring the body back to homeostasis. (your brain)
Effector "fixes the problem"; responds to the brain's signals to bring the body to homeostasis such as sweating if you are overheating.
Cell signaling The process of cell-to-cell communication
Negative feedback loop A feedback loop that causes a system to change in the opposite direction from which it is moving; decreases the function of a system; sweat to cool down
Dependent variable variable that RESPONDS
Independent variable variable that is MANIPULATED (changed)
Control In an experiment, the standard that is used for comparison; variable that is left constant/doesn't change
Cell smallest unit of life
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform the same function.
Organ group of tissues that work together to perform closely related functions
Stem cells undifferentiated cells; no purpose yet but have potential; after zygote divides...
Zygote fertilized egg; when sperm and egg met
PMAT Order in which mitosis occurs; prophase, anaphase, telephase, and metaphase

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
