Winds

TermDefinition
Coriolis Effect Because the Earth rotates on its axis, circulating air is deflected toward the right in the Northern Hemisphere and toward the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
Trade Winds The trade winds are winds that reliably blow east to west just north and south of the equator.
Prevailing Westerlies Prevailing winds from the west toward the east in the middle latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees latitude.
Polar Easterlies Dry, cold prevailing winds that blow from the east.
Land Breeze A breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, especially at night, owing to the relative warmth of the sea.
Sea Breeze A breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
