TermDefinition
Wind he perceptible natural movement of the air, especially in the form of a current of air blowing from a particular direction.
Anemometer an instrument that measures wind speed and wind pressure.
Wind Vane a revolving pointer to show the direction of the wind, typically mounted on top of a building.
Coriolis Effect Because the Earth rotates on its axis, circulating air is deflected toward the right in the Northern Hemisphere and toward the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
Trade Winds The trade winds are winds that reliably blow east to west just north and south of the equator.
Prevailing Westerlies prevailing winds from the west toward the east in the middle latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees latitude.
Polar Easterlies Polar easterlies are dry, cold prevailing winds that blow from the east.
Land Breeze a local wind system characterized by a flow from land to water late at night.
Sea Breeze a breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
El nino a warming of the ocean surface, or above-average sea surface temperatures, in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
