Evolution nd Classification

Fossil Record means - History of the Earth when looking at fossils and how plants and animals have changed over time.
Evolution means - Changes over time
Vestigial Structures means - Structures that are still there and have not all gone away over time. Example - our wisdom teeth, appendix, whale hind legs
Homologous Structures means - Similar bone structure in animals
Embryology means - Looking at very early development in animals and how close they are to each other.
Charles Darwin means - Father of evolution
Adaptation means - Changes in the body to meet a location
Taxonomy means - The study of identifying, classifying, and naming organisms
Binomial Nomenclature means - Two named system - GENUS then SPECIES
What are the levels of classification from the most general to the most specific? Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What are the four steps to natural selection? Overpopulation, genetic variation, struggle to survive, successful reproduction
What is natural selection? Strongest genetics will go on to reproduce and pass their traits to the next generation.
What is a variation? Small changes in the population - just like each of us have changes, so do insects, birds, even though they are the same species.
This is the proper way to write a binomial nomenclator organism. Upper case then lower case - underlined or in Italics.
What are the two kingdoms under the Domain - Prokaryotic? Archaea bacteria and Eubacteria
What are the four kingdoms under the Domain - Eukaryotic? Protists, Fungi, Plants, Animals
A dichotomous key is - A series of paired statements that identify an organism
When using a dichotomous key, always start at what paired statements? Number One
