| Peristalsis | Involuntary muscle movement that pushes food along the alimentary canal |
| Mechanical digestion | Physical changes to food caused by organs or movement through the alimentary canal |
| Chemical digestion | Chemical changes to food as it moves through the alimentary canal |
| Surfactant | Responsible for preventing alveoli from collapsing as air is inhaled and exhaled |
| Secretin | Hormone responsible for stimulating the release of bicarbonate from the pancreas |
| Adaptive immunity | The immune system's capability to attack foreign invaders but spare normal, biologic cells |
| Ruffini corpuscle | Receptor responsible for sensing persistent or crude touch |
| Permissiveness | One hormone allowing another to have to its full effect |
| Innate immunity | The immune system in which a person is born with |
| pH | Measures the acidity or alkalinity of a substance |
| Erythropoietin | Hormone secreted by the kidneys, responsible for red blood cell production |
