| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| observation | The act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way. |
| inference | A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know. |
| Hypothesis | A tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation. |
| Independent Variable | The variable that is deliberately changed by the scientist. |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that is observed and changes in response to the independent variable. |
| Control Group | The group that is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes to the independent variable. |
| Quantitative Data | Numbers obtained by counting or measuring. |
| Qualitative Data | Descriptions that involve characteristics that cannot be measured numerically. |
| Theory | A tested, highly-reliable scientific explanation of events in the natural world; incorporates many well-supported hypotheses. Biology, The science that employs scientific methodology to study living things. |
| Sexual Reproduction | Cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism. |
| Asexual Reproduction | A new organism is formed from a single parent. DNA, The molecule that carries directions for inheritance. |
| Metabolism | The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials. |
| Stimulus | A signal to which an organism responds. |
| Homeostasis | Relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain |
| Evolve | Change over time |
| Atom | The basic unit of matter |
| Nucleus | The center of the atom; formed by strong forces between protons and neutrons; location of genetic material. |
| Element | A pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom. Isotope, Atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons. |
| Compound | A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions. |
| Ironic Bond | Formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another. |
| Ion | A positively or negatively charged atom |
| Covalent Bond | Formed wen atoms share electrons |
| Molecule | The structure that results when atoms are joined together by covalent bonds |
| Van Der Waals Forces | Slight attraction that develops between oppositely charged regions of nearby molecules |
| Hydrogen Bond | The attraction between a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge and another atom with a partial negative charge. |
| Cohesion | The attraction between molecules of the same substance. |
| adhesion | The attraction between molecules of different substances |
| Mixture | A material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together, but not chemically combined |
| Solution | A type of mixture in which all components are evenly distributed |
| Solute | The substance that is dissolved |
| Solvent | The substance in which the solute dissolves |
| Suspension | A mixture of water and non-dissolved material |
| pH scale | Scale with values from 0-14; used to measure the concentration of H+ ions in a solution. 0-7 = acidic, 7 = neutral, 7-14 = basic. |
| Acid | Compounds that form hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution; pH less than 7 |
