inference A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know.
Hypothesis A tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation.
Independent Variable The variable that is deliberately changed by the scientist.
Dependent Variable The variable that is observed and changes in response to the independent variable.
Control Group The group that is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes to the independent variable.
Quantitative Data Numbers obtained by counting or measuring.
Qualitative Data Descriptions that involve characteristics that cannot be measured numerically.
Theory A tested, highly-reliable scientific explanation of events in the natural world; incorporates many well-supported hypotheses. Biology, The science that employs scientific methodology to study living things.
Sexual Reproduction Cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism.
Asexual Reproduction A new organism is formed from a single parent. DNA, The molecule that carries directions for inheritance.
Metabolism The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials.
Stimulus A signal to which an organism responds.
Homeostasis Relatively constant internal physical and chemical conditions that organisms maintain
Evolve Change over time
Atom The basic unit of matter
Nucleus The center of the atom; formed by strong forces between protons and neutrons; location of genetic material.
Element A pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom. Isotope, Atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons.
Compound A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions.
Ironic Bond Formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
Ion A positively or negatively charged atom
Covalent Bond Formed wen atoms share electrons
Molecule The structure that results when atoms are joined together by covalent bonds
Van Der Waals Forces Slight attraction that develops between oppositely charged regions of nearby molecules
Hydrogen Bond The attraction between a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge and another atom with a partial negative charge.
Cohesion The attraction between molecules of the same substance.
adhesion The attraction between molecules of different substances
Mixture A material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together, but not chemically combined
Solution A type of mixture in which all components are evenly distributed
Solute The substance that is dissolved
Solvent The substance in which the solute dissolves
Suspension A mixture of water and non-dissolved material
pH scale Scale with values from 0-14; used to measure the concentration of H+ ions in a solution. 0-7 = acidic, 7 = neutral, 7-14 = basic.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
