science weather

TermDefinition
Clouds a visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the atmosphere, typically high above the ground.
Condensation water which collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.
Cirrus Clouds Cirrus is a genus of high cloud made of ice crystals. Cirrus clouds typically appear delicate and wispy with white strands. Cirrus are usually formed when warm, dry air rises, causing water vapor deposition onto rocky or metallic dust particles at high al
Hygrometer an instrument for measuring the humidity of the air or a gas.
Map a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads.
globe a spherical model of Earth
Cumulonimbus (storm clouds) cloud forming a towering mass with a flat base at fairly low altitude and often a flat top, as in thunderstorms.
Cirrocumulus Cirrocumulus clouds are thin cloud patches found high in the troposphere
Wind Wind is the natural movement of air or other gases relative to a planet's surface.
Anemomter an instrument for measuring the speed of the wind, or of any current of gas.
Wind vane an instrument that tells you the wind direction.
Coriolis Effect circulating air is deflected toward the right in the Northern Hemisphere and toward the left in the Southern Hemisphere
Trade winds winds that reliably blow east to west just north and south of the equator
Prevailing westerlies the belt of prevailing westerly winds in the mid-latitudes of the northern and southern hemispheres.
Polar Easterlies are the dry, cold prevailing winds that blow around the high-pressure areas of the polar highs at the North and South Poles.
Sea breeze a breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
Land breeze a breeze blowing toward the sea from the land, especially at night, owing to the relative warmth of the sea.
Barometer an instrument measuring atmospheric pressure, used especially in forecasting the weather and determining altitude.
High pressure have more air pressure than their surroundings
Low pressure lower pressure at its center than the areas around it
Air pressure the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth
Cold Front forms when a cold air mass pushes into a warmer air mass.the boundary of an advancing mass of cold air, in particular the trailing edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system.
Warm Front the boundary of an advancing mass of warm air, in particular the leading edge of the warm sector of a low-pressure system.
Occluded front forms when a warm air mass gets caught between two cold air masses
statinary front a front between warm and cold air masses that is moving very slowly or not at all.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
