Ascites Excess fluid in the peritoneal cavity
Asterixis Abnormal muscle tremor consisting of involuntary jerking movements
Cirrhosis A progressive irreversible disorder, eventually leading to liver failure, the end stage of chronic liver disease
Dawn phenomenon A rise in glucose between 4 A.M. and 8 A.M. that is not a response to hypoglycemia
Encephalopathy Generalized brain dysfunction marked by varying degrees of impairment of speech, cognition, orientation, and arousal
Esophageal varices Enlarged thin
Hematemesis Blood in vomit
Hepatitis Inflammation of the liver, usually caused by a virus, may be acute or chronic
Hyperglycemia Elevated blood glucose levels (above 16 mg/dl) which causes osmotic diuresis and if chronic, damages vessel epithelium and renal glomeruli
Hypoglycemia Low blood glucose levels, deficiency of blood sugar
IDDM Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus
Insulin A hormone that facilitates entry of glucose into fat and muscle cells for energy
Jaundice Yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membrane, and sclera, caused by greater than normal amount of bilirubin in the blood
Ketoacidosis A condition of very high blood glucose and insufficient insulin that results in accumulation of ketones and fatty acids in the blood and urine and diuresis
Lipodystrophy Disturbance of fat metabolism. Common findings include localized accumulation of fat under the skin and on the trunk, or fatty atrophy
Nephropathy Disease of the kidney. It includes inflammatory (nephritis), degenerative (nephrosis), and sclerotic lesion of the kidney
Neuropathy Damage to peripheral nerves causing hyper or hyposensation and leading to pain and injury
NIDDM Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, the former abbreviation for the disease now known as Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Obstruction Blockage of a structure that prevents it fro functioning normally
Paracentesis Aspiration of fluid from the peritoneal cavity
Portal hypertension Elevated pressure in the portal venous system that causes rerouting of blood to adjoining lower pressure vessels
Retinopathy Any non inflammatory retinal damage or disease
Somogyl effect (phenomenon?) In Diabetes mellitus, rebound hyperglycemia following an episode of hypoglycemia caused by counter regulatory hormone release
