Part 1 Vocabulary

Heritable Inherited genetically
Extinction When no more of species of penguin are alive anymore, when the last of that penguin species dies
Fossil record Total number of fossils that have been discovered as well as the information that can be determined from them
Population (species) a group of the same species of organism in an area
Sample A random smaller group chosen to represent the characteristics from a whole population
Distribution The plotting of data on a graph and displaying it with a line connecting the data points
Mean Is the center or top of the curve in the data
Line of descendants Organism that can be traced directly to organism in the past through parent offspring relationships For example parents, grandparents great great great grandparents all way back through hundreds of generations
Humerus Upper arm bone
Femur Thigh bone
Characteristic Feature or trait passed down through generations
Ancient ancestors From many previous generations beyond a grandparent
Immediate ancestor Relation to an individual, mom, dad, grandparent
Generations Biologically related family members. Example: Many lines in a family tree including: Grandparents, parents, children,
Species a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes
Fossil Remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form
Offspring Next generation using a reproductive strategy, a child or baby
Variation The differences within a trait
Genes A certain region of a chromosome that causes a certain protein to be made
Alleles Different forms of genes which can cause different forms of proteins to lead to variations in a trait, like extra big muscles or typical ones EE or Ee
Genetic information The instructions stored in genes for making specific proteins
Typical When a characteristic is seen more often in a population
Trait A characteristic or feature within a certain species of organism
