| Term | Definition |

| Precipitation | Water comes down in the form of rain, snow, hail, sleet, etc. |
| Runoff | Water moves across the surface of the land until it reaches rivers, lakes, and oceans. |
| Accumulation | The collection of precipitation in large bodies of water. |
| Infiltration | Precipitation or water on the ground soaks into the soil and moves into rocks through pore spaces and cracks. |
| Plant Uptake | Roots remove water from the soil and deliver it to the rest of the plant. |
| Transpiration | When plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen and water through small leaf openings. |
| Evaporation | The sun’s heat energy causes liquid and frozen water to change into water vapor. |
| Condensation | Temperature changes cause water vapor to condense from a gas into a liquid state which forms clouds. |
| Weather | The state of the air and atmosphere at a particular time and place. |
| Climate | The average weather pattern for a region over a long period of time. |
