How Plants Obtain Energy

| photosynthesis | The process in which plants produce oxygen and glucose |
| plant | an organism that can make its own food. They need water, air, sunlight, space, and nutrients for survival. |
| glucose | A type of sugar produced by plants, used as food |
| stem | supports the plant and contains the xylem and phloem |
| roots | anchors (keeps) the plant in place, absorbs water, and stores food |
| leaves | performs photosynthesis to create food for the plant (sugar) and oxygen |
| stomata | Small openings on the surface of a plant’s leaves where carbon dioxide enters |
| xylem | moves water and minerals up the plant from roots to chutes; 1 way tube |
| phloem | transports glucose to all parts of the plant (sugar highway; moves in 2 directions |
| transpiration | evaporation of water off of plant's leaves |
| chlorophyll | A substance that absorbs energy from sunlight and makes plants green |
| energy | the ability to perform work |
