Water and the Earth 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| erosion | Process by which rock, sand, and soil are carried away (i.e. wind, water, glaciers) |
| Deposition | The settling out of particles that have been taken by erosion |
| weathering | Rocks are broken down by both chemical and physical changes. |
| Mechanical Weathering | Any of the various weathering processes that cause physical disintegration of exposed rock without any change in the chemical composition of the rock. (i.e. ice wedging, wind abrasion) |
| Abrasion | A wearing away or rubbing away of rocks by friction (by wind or water) |
| Chemical Weathering | Minerals in the rocks are changed chemically, the main cause of chemical weathering is acid rain (i.e. erasing of old gravestones, easily breaks down marble) |
| Acid Rain | Rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm, typically to forests and lakes. |
| Sediment | Very, very small pieces of rock that are formed when larger rocks are broken apart by erosion. |
| Glacier | A large mass of slow moving ice and snow on land resulting in grooves and scratches on surrounding rocks. Glaciers also pick up, or pluck, everything in its path. |
| Ground Water | Water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers |
| Delta | A triangular area of land formed from deposits of sediment where a river runs into the ocean |
