Water and the Earth 2

TermDefinition
erosion Process by which rock, sand, and soil are carried away (i.e. wind, water, glaciers)
Deposition The settling out of particles that have been taken by erosion
weathering Rocks are broken down by both chemical and physical changes.
Mechanical Weathering Any of the various weathering processes that cause physical disintegration of exposed rock without any change in the chemical composition of the rock. (i.e. ice wedging, wind abrasion)
Abrasion A wearing away or rubbing away of rocks by friction (by wind or water)
Chemical Weathering Minerals in the rocks are changed chemically, the main cause of chemical weathering is acid rain (i.e. erasing of old gravestones, easily breaks down marble)
Acid Rain Rainfall made sufficiently acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm, typically to forests and lakes.
Sediment Very, very small pieces of rock that are formed when larger rocks are broken apart by erosion.
Glacier A large mass of slow moving ice and snow on land resulting in grooves and scratches on surrounding rocks. Glaciers also pick up, or pluck, everything in its path.
Ground Water Water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers
Delta A triangular area of land formed from deposits of sediment where a river runs into the ocean
