Metal structure
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Intergranular | metal breaking in between the grains |
| transgranular | metal breaking through the grains |
| Dendrites | the skeleton of crystals, they grow when cooling metal solidifies, grow until they meet another grain boundary |
| Crystal Nucleus | the unit cell that forms when atoms move together as a metal begins to cool |
| unit cell | The smallest repeating cell in a crystal structure |
| three main types of bonding | ionic, covalent, metallic |
| Iconic bonding | electrostatic attractive forces between ions of opposite charge, positive and negative |
| Covalent bonding | sharing of electrons between atoms |
| Large grains | are weaker and fail easier |
| small grains | stronger and harder but less ductile |
