Cell division

HBIO3 unit 6 Dec 1

QuestionAnswer
Why do cells divide? -Growth -Reproduce -Repare -Efficiency
Why do single celled organisms divide? To reproduce
To make sperm and eggs cells... Divide
Binary fission is... The division of a single entity into two or more parts
To replace damaged cells... Healthy cells divide
What do red blood cells do to old cells? Rip them to shreds (only last 120 days)
Limited DNA means a cell... Cannot live and must divide
Volume grows at a (blank?) rate than surface area Faster
When volume is greater than surface area... The surface area cannot support the volume and the cell must divide
Interphase is... The period of cell growth
During interphase... Cell does it's job and prepares for division
The 3 phases during interphase are... G1 (gap 1), S (synthesis), and G2 (gap 2)
During G1... -The cell is the smallest it will be -Organelles are copied
During S... -DNA is copied -Centrosomes are copied
During G2... -Organelles are copied -Cell prepares for all division
M phase is when... The cell divides (cell division)
The 2 major phases during M phase are... Mitosis and Cytokinesis
Mitosis is when... The nucleus divides
The 4 phases during mitosis are... -Prophase -Metaphase -Anaphase -Telophase
During prophase... -Nuclear envelopes breakdown -Chromatin condenses into chromosome -Centrosomes move to opposite ends of the cell
A centromere... Holds sister chromatids together
During metaphase... -Sister chromatids line up across the middle of the cell -Spindle fibers attach centrosomes to centromeres
During anaphase... -Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
During telophase... -New nuclear envelopes form -Chromosomes decondenses into chromatin
During Cytokinesis... -Cytoplasim gets split between the cells -Cleavage forms in animal cells -Cell plate forms in plant cells
A chromosome is... DNA and protein
What do chromosomes carrie? Genes - each carries different genes
How many chromosomes do humans have? 46, 23 mom and 23 dad
Homologous... Carrie the same type of information
Sister chromatids... Are exact copies of each other
A diploid (2n) is a... Full set of chromosomes (almost every cell is a diploid)
A haploid (n).... Does not have a full set of chromosomes
P.M.A.T. (Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase) stands for? P- Pamela M- Mallard A- Ate T- Tacos

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
