Neglected tropical diseases

QuestionAnswer
What are NTD's? Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are considered neglected due to their low priority on the global health agenda. They receive comparatively little funding or research attention & have limited dedicated resources
NTDs Many NTDs are transmitted by vectors from animal reservoirs & are assoc. with complex life cycles. Whilst fatality rate is low, burden of disease is high. >1 billion people each year are affected by NTDs.
NTDs NTDs trap people in a cycle of poverty and disease. Many communities are vulnerable to multiple NTDs, so co-infection is common
Socio-economic impact of NTDs NTDs directly affect almost every major development and global health issue. NTDs prevent children from attending school, negatively impact on adult economic productivity and their ability to look after their children and loved ones.
Socio-economic impact of NTDs Many NTDs have a more severe impact on women and girls. Without NTD control, many families and communities are trapped in a cycle of poverty and disease
Simple to control Many NTDs are transmitted by vectors (e.g. trachoma, Trypanosomiasis) are transmitted by vectors or between people in areas with poor sanitation and contaminated water, or without access to clean water for basic hygiene (e.g. soil transmitted helminths)
WHO road map for tackling NTDs Three pillars: accelerating programmatic action intensifying cross-cutting approaches and changing operating models and culture to facilitate country ownership
WHO road map for tackling NTDs Accompanying the WHO NTD roadmap is a documents that recommends integration of One Health into the design and delivery of NTD control programmes as well as coordinated action on NTDs across key sectors (besides human health)
