Cell Respiration

Cell Respiration Vocabulary List

TermDefinition
ADP (adenosine diphosphate) A molecule that stores and releases energy within cells.
Aerobic cellular respiration The process by which cells generate energy in the presence of oxygen.
Alcohol (ethanol) A type of organic compound produced in some fermentation processes.
Alcohol fermentation A process where microorganisms convert sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
Anaerobic cellular respiration The process of generating energy in cells without the use of oxygen.
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) The primary energy currency of cells.
Bacteria Microscopic single-celled organisms.
Carbohydrate An organic compound, such as sugars and starches, that provides energy to cells.
Carbon (C) A chemical element essential for life and found in all organic compounds.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) A gas produced during cellular respiration and used in photosynthesis.
Cellular respiration The process by which cells release energy from food molecules.
Cytosol (aka cytoplasm) The fluid portion of the cell.
Energy The ability to do work or cause a change.
Fermentation A process where cells generate energy without oxygen, often producing alcohol or lactic acid.
Glucose A simple sugar and a primary source of energy for cells.
Glycolysis The initial step of cellular respiration, breaking down glucose into smaller molecules.
Krebs cycle A series of reactions in cellular respiration that further breaks down molecules.
Lactic acid A compound produced in some fermentation processes and during muscle exertion.
Lactic acid fermentation A process where sugars are converted into lactic acid in the absence of oxygen.
Mitochondria Organelles in eukaryotic cells where cellular respiration occurs.
Mitochondrion Singular form of mitochondria.
Muscle cell A cell specialized for contraction and movement.
NAD+ A coenzyme involved in cellular respiration.
NADH The reduced form of NAD+, carrying electrons during cellular respiration.
Output The end result or product of a process.
Oxygen (O2) A gas essential for aerobic cellular respiration.
Products Substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction.
Pyruvate (pyruvic acid) A molecule produced in glycolysis, a key player in cellular respiration.
Reactants Substances present at the beginning of a chemical reaction.
Sugar A general term for carbohydrates, including simple sugars and complex carbohydrates.
input materials or substances used in a chemical reaction or process.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
