erosion the process by which pieces of weathered rock and soil are moved from one place to another—it can be caused by gravity, running water, glaciers, waves, or wind
global warming a gradual increase in the temperature of the Earth’s surface caused by human activities
greenhouse gas any of various gases (such as carbon dioxide or methane) that absorb infrared radiation, trap energy in the atmosphere, and contribute to the greenhouse effect
mangrove a tropical coastline tree or shrub that grows near water, with roots above tide levels
marine related to the ocean
natural resource a material or substance found in nature and used by humans
overfishing the decline in fish numbers when reproduction of a species is not sufficient to replace the quantity of fish caught
per capita for each person
population the whole number of individuals of a particular species living in a particular area
sediment small solid materials, like sand, that are carried by air or water and settle at the bottom of bodies of water, such as on riverbeds or the ocean floor
