Descent with modification Different species adapted to the environment
Natural Selection Individuals with successful traits produce more offspring and are more likely to pass those traits on to the next generations
Homologous structures similar structures (like limbs)in species that share a common ancestor
Vestigial structures remnants of structures that were important at one time but have no clear function today
Artificial selection breeding domestic animals and plants to produce offspring with desired traits
Gene pool all the alleles of all the individuals of a given population
Microevolution small scale generation-to-generation change in the frequencies of alleles
Genetic Drift A change in the gene pool due to chance
Founder Effect Small population with a limited gene pool, genetic drift is more dramatic
Gene flow exchange of genes with another population
emigration genes exiting an area
immigration genes coming in to an area
fitness a measure of an individuals contribution to the gene pool of the next generation
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium When populations are not experiencing changes to their gene pools, they stop evolving for a period of time
