| Term | Definition |

| convection | energy transfer during which hot fluid rises and cold fluid sinks, creating a cycle |
| convection cell | a mass of fluid flowing in a cycle in one place |
| energy transfer | movement of energy from one place or object to another; the process that drives the cycle of convection |
| fluid | substances that can flow, such as a gas or a liquid |
| model | an explanation or a representation of an object tha can't be studied easily |
| gas | a state of matter in which particles are most spread apart and has no definite shape or definite volume |
| liquid | the state of matter where particles are closer than a gas. A liquid has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container |
| solid | a state a matter where particles are tightly packed together; solids have a definite shape and volume |
| particle model | a model using atoms or molecules |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| thermal energy | radiant energy that heats |
