| abrasion | cut or scrape that is usually non serious |
| abscess | collection of pus in any part of the body |
| acute | lasting a short period of time but relatively severe |
| benign | condition that has no cancer or harm |
| chronic | lasting a long period of time : reccuring |
| contusion | bruise: result of a direct blow or impact such as a fall |
| defibrillator | devices that apply an electric charge or current to the heart to restore normal heartbeat |
| edema | swelling: excess amount of fluid in the tissues |
| embolism | blocked artery caused by a foreign body, such as a blood clot or an air bubble |
| epidermis | outer layer of the skin |
| fracture | a break |
| gland | group of cells that secrete a substance for use in the body |
| hypertension | high blood pressure |
| inpatient | hospital patient who stays in the hospital overnight and meets a set of clinical criteria |
| intravenous | injected or put into vein |
| malignant | harmful or dangerous: likely to spread and cause destruction and death |
| outpatient | patient who is not hospitalized overnight and returns home the same day |
| prognosis | prediction regarding the probable outcome of a disease |
| relapse | the return of signs and symptoms of a disease after remission |
| sutures | surgical stitch used to join the edges of an incision or wound, area where bones join or fuse together |
| transplant | procedure that is done to replace organs with a healthy organ |
| vaccine | substance given to an individual to produce immunity to a disease |
| zoonotic disease | infections that are spread between people and animals |
| biopsy | excision of a small piece of tissue for microscope examination |
