Mechanical Property

QuestionAnswer
Why is Chromium added to metals? To help prevent corrosion
Ductility the flexibility of a material, the ability of material to change its shape without breaking.
Mechanical Properties characteristic dimensional changes to a material in response to an applied external mechanical force
Stress the internal force produced over a given area of the material under a given load
How does welding effect metal? It reduces its' ductility and increases its' brittleness
Fatigue the loss of strength due to repeated loads
What does adding carbon do to metal? Increases hardness and strength
Corrosion the damage of a substance or its’ properties because of a reaction with its’ environment
Brittleness the opposite function of impact strength
To be tough metal needs to have Strength and ductility
