Matter
for a quiz
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Matter | Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Chemistry | Chemistry: The study of matter and how matter changes. |
| Substance | Substance: A single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific make-up, or composition. |
| Physical Property | Physical property: A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance. |
| Chemical Property | Chemical Property: A characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances. |
| Atom | Atom: the basic particle that all elements are made. |
| Molecules | Molecules: A group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond |
| Chemical Bond | Chemical bond: When atoms combine from more than one element’s. |
| Compound | Compound: A substance made of 2 or more elements that are combined in a set ratio (Chemical formula: H20) |
| Chemical Formula | Chemical Formula: Shows the elements that make the compound and the ratio or amount of atoms of each element. |
| Mixture | Mixture: made of 2 or more substances that are together in the same place, but their atoms have not chemically bonded. |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | Heterogeneous mixture: When a mixture is not the same throughout |
| Homogenous Mixture | Homogenous mixture: When the mixture is the same throughout. |
| Weight | Weight: The measure of the force of gravity on you. |
| Mass | Mass: The amount of matter in the object. |
| SI | SI: International unit of measure that scientists use. |
| Volume | Volume: The amount of space that matter occupies. |
| Density | Density: How tightly packed the matter is in an object, compares the objects mass to its volume. Density formula D: M/V |
| Physical Change | Physical Change: It alters the form or appearance of matter but does not turn any substance in the matter into a different substance. If a substance undergoes a physical change is still the same substance after the change. |
| Chemical Change | Chemical Change: A change in matter that produces one or more new substances, also called a chemical reaction. |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | Law of Conservation of Mass: Matter is not created or destroyed in any physical or chemical change only changed into something different. |
| Thermal Energy | Thermal Energy: The total energy of the motion of all of the particles (atoms/molecules) in an object. (Heat Energy) |
| Endothermic Change | Endothermic Change: A change in which energy is absorbed. |
| Exothermic Change | Exothermic Change: A change in which energy is released. |
| Chemical Energy | Chemical Energy: The energy stored in the chemical bonds between atoms is a form of energy. |
