Tools and Techniques

QuestionAnswer
Indicators Chemicals that can show the presence of a specific substance. A positive test indicator will change color if the substance is present
Iodine Tests for the presence of starch, a complex carb (sugar). If starch is present, then iodine will change from amber to a blue-black color.
Benedicts Tests for the presence of glucose, a simple carb (sugar). If glucose is present, benedicts will changes from a blue to a red, orange, or yellow color. Benedicts must be heated.
Biuret Tests for the presence of protein. If protein is present, it will go from a blue to a purple or pink color.
Bromothymal Blue Tests for CO^2(or acid, since CO^2 is acidic). If CO^2 is present, then BB will change from blue to yellow.
Red Litmus Paper Tests for bases and will turn blue in a base.
Blue Litmus Paper Tests for acids and will turn red in an acid.
Hydrion Paper Tests for the exact pH of a substance.
Phenolphthalein Tests for bases and will turn hot pink in a base.
Brown Paper Bag Tests for fats/lipids. Fats will leave a greasy stain on the bag.
Acidic-base scale 1-6 are acids, 7 is neutral, 8-14 are bases
