TermDefinition
How many kingdoms are there? 5
What are the 5 kingdoms? Monera, protista, fungi, plantae, animalia
What are Monera? Prokaryote, Unicellular, No chloroplast, a cell membrane, and a cell wall
What are Protist? eukaryote, unicellular, no chloroplast, a cell membrane, and some do have a cell wall
What are fungi? eukaryote, mostly multicellular, no chloroplast, a cell membrane, and a cell wall
What are Plants? eukaryote, multicellular, a chloroplast, a cell membrane, and no cell wall
What are Animals? eukaryote, multicellular, no chloroplast, a cell membrane, and a cell wall
Cellular respiration the process where energy is released from an organisms food
How is cellular respiration made energy rich foods + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
species a group of organisms that can potentially interbreed in nature to produce viable, fertile offspring and are reproductively isolated from other groups
eukaryotic cells that have membrane-bound organelles including a true nucleus
prokaryotic cells that have no membrane-bound organelles and no true nucleus
An Organism A living thing
Unicellular An organism made up of one cell
multicellular An organism composed of many cells
mitochondria Organelles found in eukaryotes and the site of cellular respiration
Nucleus Contains genetic material and DNA which provides the cell the instructions for living
Chloroplast site of photosynthesis (only in plants)
cytoplasm The jelly-like substance that fills the cell
Vacuole a membrane-bound fluid filled within a space that is used for storage, water, waste and food molecules
cell wall a non living layer that surrounds the cell membrane, it provides the structure/shape for plants
ribosomes site of protein production- found in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Characteristics of life SNR GERMS sensitivity, nutrition, reproduction, growth, excretion, respiration, movement, structural organization
Classifications KPCOFGS Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Levels of organisation cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms
Domain Archaea, bacteria, eukarya
Meaning of classification Systematic + rational grouping of organisms + ecosystems to depict the biological relationships between them
An example of Monera/Prokaryote E. coli
An example of Animalia mammals, etc
An example of Protista euglena, amoeba
An example of Fungi mushrooms
An example of a Plant ferns, moss etc
Excretion The process of the removal of metabolic wastes from the body of an organism.
Growth The process that results in an organism increasing in size (often due to cell division).
Movement The process where the whole organism or part of it changes position or orientation.
Nutrition The process whereby chemicals required by an organism to maintain life are obtained.
Reproduction The process whereby new organisms are produced from pre-existing ones.
Respiration The process whereby food is broken down to release energy.
Sensitivity The state where a response is produced due to a stimulus. (response to Stimuli)
Structural organization The state where an organism has a definite structure and is made up of cells.
Stimulus A change in an organism’s environment which produces a response.
Taxonomy The practice of classifying organisms.
Function of petal Often brightly coloured to attract pollinators
Function of Sepal the green leaf life structure that protect flower bud
Function of the pistil The female part of the flower made up of the stigma, style and ovary
Function of the ovary contains ovules which contain the egg cells
stigma collects pollen after pollination
Function of the stamen the male part of the flower and consists of the anther and filament
Function of the Anther where pollen is produced, pollen grains contain the male sex cells
Function of the filament Holds up the anther for pollinators
what is the cranium? The skull
What is a coastal? The ribs
what is the humerus? the upper arm bone
what is the vertebra? the back bone
what is the phalanges? the finger a toe bones
what is the pelvis? the hip bone
What is the femur? The thigh bone
What is the carpals? The wrist bones
What is the scapula? The shoulder bone

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
