QuestionAnswer
acellular slime mold a type of funguslike protist that forms a multinucleate structure that crawls in amoeboid fashion and ingests decaying organic matter; also called plasmodial slime mold.
algae any photosynthetic member of the eukaryotic kingdom Protista.
alveolate a large assemblage of protists that is assigned kingdom status by many systematists. The alveolates, which are characterized by a system of sacs beneath the cell membrane, include ciliates, foraminiferans, dinoflagellates, and apicomplexans.
amoeba a type of animal-like protist that uses a characteristic streaming mode of locomotion by extending a cellular projection called a pseudopod.
apicomplexan a member of the protist phylum Apicomplexa, which includes mostly parasitic, single-celled eukaryotes such as Plasmodium, which causes malaria in humans; are part of a larger group known as the alveolates.
cellular slime mold a funguslike protist consisting of individual amoeboid cells that can aggregate to form a sluglike mass, which in turn forms a fruiting body.
cilia a short, hairlike projection from the surface of certain eukaryotic cells that contains microtubules in a 9 + 2 arrangement. The movement of cilia may propel cells through a fluid medium or move fluids over a stationary surface layer of cells.
ciliate a protozoan characterized by cilia and by a complex unicellular structure, including harpoonlike organelles called trichocysts. Members of the genus Paramecium are well-known ciliates.
diatom a protist that includes photosynthetic forms with two-part glassy outer coverings; important photosynthetic organisms in fresh water and salt water.
dinoflagellate a protist that includes photosynthetic forms in which two flagella project through armorlike plates; abundant in oceans; can reproduce rapidly, causing “red tides.”
euglenid a protist characterized by one or more whiplike flagella that are used for locomotion and by a photoreceptor that detects light. Euglenoids are photosynthetic, but if deprived of chlorophyll, some are capable of heterotrophic nutrition.
foraminiferan an aquatic (largely marine) protist characterized by a typically elaborate calcium carbonate shell.
phytoplankton photosynthetic protists that are abundant in marine and freshwater environments.
plasmodium a sluglike mass of cytoplasm containing thousands of nuclei that are not confined within individual cells.
protist a eukaryotic organism that is not a plant, animal, or fungus. The term encompasses a diverse array of organisms and does not represent a monophyletic group.
protozoa a nonphotosynthetic or animal-like protist.
pseudoplasmodium an aggregation of individual amoeboid cells that form a sluglike mass.
pseudopod an extension of the plasma membrane by which certain cells, such as amoebae, locomote and engulf prey.
radiolarian an aquatic protist (largely marine) characterized by typically elaborate silica shells.
water mold a funguslike protist that includes some pathogens, such as the downy mildew, which attacks grapes.
