Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. |
heterogeneous mixture | A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished easily |
homogeneous mixture | A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture |
Chromatography | A technique used to separate mixtures that are or can be colored |
Evaporation | A technique used to separate out homogeneous mixtures with one or more dissolved solids, like saltwater |
Filtration | A method used to separate out substances by size |
Sedimentation | Letting a heavier substance settle to the bottom of a liquid |
Magnetism | A method that separates substances that have magnetic components |
Decanting | A method of separating immiscible liquids by pouring the top layer into another container. |
Solution | A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances |
Suspension | A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated. |
Solvent | a substance in which a solute dissolves to form a solution |
Solute | A substance that is dissolved in a solution. |
Solubility | The ability to dissolve in another substance |
Unsaturated | A mixture in which more solute can be dissolved |
Saturated | A mixture that has so much solute in it that no more will dissolve |
Supersaturated | A mixture that contains more of the solute that can be dissolved at normal conditions |
Concentration | A measurement of how much solute exists within a certain volume of solvent |
Soluble | capable of being dissolved |
Insoluble | incapable of being dissolved |
