artificial selection humans choosing traits to favor - dog breeds
diversity more than one version of traits in an organism
gene flow DNA moving into or out of an area as individuals migrate
gene frequency how often alleles (2 letters of genes) occur in the population
genetic drift a random change in gene frequency - a hurricane kills a lot of individuals so the diversity of genes changes
mortality rate how many individuals die in a time frame
natural seelction environment favoring one version of a trait over another - one is more "fit" than the other
adaptation a characteristic developed in a population over time - like the long neck of a giraffe
competition organisms trying to get the same resource at the same time
environment conditions in which an organism lives - the biotic and abiotic factors
habitat house
niche job
offspring babies produced by parents
population members of the same species living in an the same area at the same time
predator hunts and eats organisims
prey organism being hunted and eaten
reproduce make more of that type of organism
species organisms of the same kind that can produce offspring
survive organisms that stay alive
