Circulatory System & Digestive System

| Arteries | blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart |
| Veins | blood vessels that carry blood to the heart |
| Capillaries | tiny blood vessels that allow materials to move from cells to blood and from blood to cells |
| Blood vessels | part of the circulatory system that holds the blood |
| Heart | part of the circulatory system that pumps the blood |
| Blood | part of the circulatory system made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma |
| Red blood cells | carry oxygen |
| White Blood Cells | fight infection |
| Platelets | help with blood clotting/stopping bleeding |
| Plasma | the liquid part of the blood that contains dissolved substances |
| Functions of the circulatory system | Transport oxygen to cells, remove waste from cells, transport hormones, repair damaged tissue, fight infections |
| Functions of the digestive system | ingestion, digestion, absorption, elmination |
| Ingestion | taking in food |
| Digestion | breaking down food |
| absorption | nutrients moving from the small intestine into the blood |
| elimination | getting rid of the waste from our food |
| Mechanical digestion | digestion using motion; chewing, biting, stomach churning |
| Chemical Digestion | digestion using acids and enzymes |
| Mouth | where chemical and mechanical digestion begins |
| Esophagus | pathway from mouth to stomach |
| Stomach | organ that leads to the small intenstine; where acids and enzymes break down food |
| Small intestine | finishes digestion and absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream |
| Large intestine | absorbs water into the bloodstream |
| Rectum | holds stoll until it is eliminated |
| Anus | the opening where stool is eliminated |
| Liver | makes bile |
| Gallbladder | stores bile |
| Pancreas | makes enzymes and releases them into digestive organs |
