QuestionAnswer
Lithosphere A rigid layer made up of the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust.
lithospheric plates large pieces of Earth's lithosphere that move over the asthenosphere
plate boundaries the edges of tectonic plates.
Asthenosphere The soft layer of the mantle on which the lithosphere floats.
magnitude Measure of the energy released during an earthquake
divergent boundary A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other.
mid-ocean ridge An underwater mountain chain where new ocean floor is formed
convergent boundary A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other.
subduction zone The region where oceanic plates sink down into the asthenosphere.
trench A deep, steep-sided canyon in the ocean floor.
transform boundary A plate boundary where two plates move past each other in opposite directions
Crust the outermost layer of the Earth
seismometers measure the seismic waves transmitted from earthquakes
seismic waves The waves that transmit energy as a result of an earthquake
mantle almost 3,000 km thick, the uppermost part is relatively cold compared with what is below it. Thus, it remains in a hard, solid state
