Vocabulary Terms: Classifying Organisms

| Binomial Nomenclature | a system that gives an organism a two-word scientific name |
| Species | a group of organisms that have similar traits |
| Genus | a group of similar species |
| Dichotomous Key | a series of descriptions arranged in pairs that leads the user to the identification of an unknown organism |
| Cladogram | a branched diagram that shows the relationship among organisms, including common ancestors |
| 1st word of an organism's scientific name | organism’s genus name |
| 2nd word of an organism's scientific name | Species Name which might describe the organism's appearance or behavior |
| Domestic Cat | Felis domesticus |
| 2 Main Kingdoms | Plants and Animals |
| Class: Class Mammalia | the animals have fur or hair, can produce milk, and are made up of orders |
| Order: Order Carnivora | meat-eating animals that include the families of cats, dogs, weasels, seals, and bears |
| Family: Family Felidae | The cat family which includes cats that roar, such as the Tiger |
| Genus: Genus Felis | Includes only purring cats. This level of classification is where the house cat gets the first word of their scientific name |
| Species: Felis Domesticus | The house cat |
| Phylum: Phylum Chordata | Includes all animals that include vertebrates and some that have cartilage rods instead of back bones |
