Unit 3- Atmosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| atmosphere | A mixture of gases that surrounds Earth. It protects us from the sun’s damaging rays, helps maintain temperatures, and protects us from meteors |
| troposphere | Lowest layer; temperature decreases with increase in altitude; weather occurs here |
| stratosphere | Layer above the troposphere; contains ozone layer; temperature increases with an increase in altitude |
| Ozone layer | Layer within the stratosphere in which ozone absorbs ultraviolet solar radiation |
| mesosphere | Between the stratosphere and thermosphere; temperature decreases as altitude increases; most meteors burn up here |
| thermosphere | Hottest layer of the atmosphere; temperature increases as altitude increases; aurora borealis (northern lights) |
| greenhouse effect | The warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of Earth that occurs when water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases absorb and reradiate energy. |
| air pressure | The measure of the force with which AIR molecules push on an area of a surface. DECREASES with increased ALTITUDE. |
| exosphere | Outermost layer of the atmosphere closest to space. |
