Unit 3- Atmosphere

TermDefinition
atmosphere A mixture of gases that surrounds Earth. It protects us from the sun’s damaging rays, helps maintain temperatures, and protects us from meteors
troposphere Lowest layer; temperature decreases with increase in altitude; weather occurs here
stratosphere Layer above the troposphere; contains ozone layer; temperature increases with an increase in altitude
Ozone layer Layer within the stratosphere in which ozone absorbs ultraviolet solar radiation
mesosphere Between the stratosphere and thermosphere; temperature decreases as altitude increases; most meteors burn up here
thermosphere Hottest layer of the atmosphere; temperature increases as altitude increases; aurora borealis (northern lights)
greenhouse effect The warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of Earth that occurs when water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases absorb and reradiate energy.
air pressure The measure of the force with which AIR molecules push on an area of a surface. DECREASES with increased ALTITUDE.
exosphere Outermost layer of the atmosphere closest to space.
