Term | Definition |
---|---|
Evidence | information that supports or refutes a claim |
Nuclear Waste | Leftover radioactive material produced by nuclear research, medical treatment, and other nuclear technology facilities |
Groundwater | Leftover radioactive material produced by nuclear research, medical treatment, and other nuclear technology facilities |
Trade-off | the act of giving up one benefit in order to gain another, greater benefit |
Aquifer | A body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater. |
Aquitard | A slab of surface at the bottom of an aquifer that does not allow water to go through |
Sediments | small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things |
Sedimentary Rock | A type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together |
Model | A representation of an object or event |
Permeable | full of holes; permeable to (able to absorb) liquids |
Igneous Rock | rock that forms when magma or lava cools and solidifies |
earthquake | a sudden release of energy in Earth's interior, which can cause shaking at the surface |
lava | Hot liquid rock ON Earth's surface |
magma | Hot, liquid rock BENEATH the earth's surface |
Volcano | an opening in Earth's surface through which lava, gas, and ash escape from a magma chamber underground |
volcanic eruption | when lava and gas are released from a volcano—sometimes explosively |
Landslide | the movement of rock, soil, and other earth materials down a slope |
Magnitude (of earthquake) | size of an earthquake |
Natural hazard | A natural event (for example an earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslides) that threatens people or has the potential to cause damage, destruction and death. |
Nuclear waste contamination | the process of nuclear waste leaking or spilling out and making the environment dangerous or unsafe for living things |
